Washington, D.C., April 23, 2025
In a landmark move poised to reshape America’s education and workforce landscape, President Donald J. Trump has issued an Executive Order titled “Advancing Artificial Intelligence Education for American Youth.” The order launches a whole-of-government initiative to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) education across K–12 schools, postsecondary programs, and lifelong learning pathways.
The initiative underscores the national urgency of equipping students, educators, and workers with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in a rapidly evolving AI-driven economy. For organizations operating in education, workforce development, technology, and policy sectors, this represents a critical shift in national strategy with immediate and long-term implications.
The Executive Order outlines a comprehensive federal policy that promotes AI literacy, provides educator training, and builds an AI-ready workforce.
“Early learning and exposure to AI concepts not only demystifies this powerful technology but also sparks curiosity and creativity,” the order states, “preparing students to become active and responsible participants in the workforce of the future.”
Key to this effort is a recognition that AI competency must begin early in elementary and secondary classrooms and extend to adult upskilling and professional development.
A new White House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence Education will coordinate efforts across federal departments. The Task Force will be chaired by the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy and include:
Departments of Education, Labor, Agriculture, and Energy
National Science Foundation (NSF)
White House policy advisors and other invited agencies
The Task Force executes the strategic vision outlined in the EO and reports on measurable progress.
Within 90 days, the Task Force will design the Presidential Artificial Intelligence Challenge, a national competition to recognize student and educator achievements in AI. Key features include:
Multiple age brackets
Regional competitions
Thematic challenges covering real-world applications of AI
The Challenge will be launched within 12 months and supported by government, industry, and nonprofit partners.
Agencies are instructed to partner with tech companies, universities, nonprofits, and educators to develop online AI learning tools and curricula. These partnerships will:
Provide foundational AI education for students
Prioritize federal grants and funding toward scalable AI teaching resources
Ensure material is classroom-ready within six months of announcement
The Departments of Education, Agriculture, and NSF are directed to:
Use discretionary grants to fund professional development in AI and computer science
Reduce administrative burdens using AI tools in classrooms
Integrate AI literacy into all subject areas, not just technical fields
Expand outreach through 4-H and Cooperative Extension programs
The Department of Labor will work to:
Develop new and expand existing AI-related Registered Apprenticeships
Leverage WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) funding to train youth in AI
Collaborate with employers and states to create dual-enrollment programs for high schoolers earning industry credentials.
Prioritize AI programs in all youth-focused employment grants and fellowships.
Clients in edtech, training, HR, and AI solutions will find this Executive Order significant. It opens avenues for:
Federal funding for AI curriculum development, teacher training, and apprenticeship programs
Strategic partnerships with agencies and local education providers
Participation in national education initiatives and competitions
Long-term positioning as leaders in AI workforce development and literacy
Now is the time to evaluate your organization’s readiness to align with national AI education and training priorities.
